One Sunday; in order to show my children the consequences of poverty caused by corruption, mismanagement, and the great society program, I drove my children to some neighborhoods in Gary, Indiana. There was a man mowing his beautifully manicured lawn with his children helping, it put my lawn to shame. Obviously, he was a family man who took great pride in his work and he involved his family. He took such care in spite of the abandon, burned, windowless homes complete with overgrown weeds and trees.
My dad once told me there were approximately one billion dollars ($1,000,000,000) given to Gary from the federal government by the late seventies. One politician, a former state representative told me that the Indiana State House of Representatives finally gave into Gary's representatives requests and gave them money to do a feasibility study for a Michael Jackson museum. The house allocated $200,000. They quickly spent the first $100,000, came back and asked for the rest. When questioned what they learned in the study, they had no answer. They never received the rest of the money. This was in the 1990's.
